NOTE: Otter Co-op does not manufacture extruded horse feeds (horse feed that looks like dried dog food or kibble) as do other manufacturers.  So... what is extrusion...
Extrusion is a process in which ingredients are cooked under pressure with high-temperature steam for a short period of time. A feed slurry is created, which is then pushed through a die while it is still host; the release of pressure coming through the die causes the feed to expand.  After the final product cools, it will harden and can be broken into unique, uniform and appropriate sized shapes.  With the high heat during processing, many of the natural vitamin content of feeds are damaged necessitating the addition of vitamin premixes.  There are pros and cons to feeding extruded feeds to horses.  One issue to be aware of is contamination, some manufacturers use the same die for both dog feed and horse feed.
